City of Yellowknife is granting free access to services for Behchokǫ̀ evacuees: Mayor Alty

As residents of Behchokǫ̀ continue to flock to Yellowknife after the evacuation order in their community, Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty spoke on the current status of Yellowknife as an evacuation centre.

According to the Mayor, the City is offering similar service benefits for Behchokǫ̀ evacuees as Hay River/KFN evacuees had during their evacuation.

“We will be offering free transit and free recreation access to evacuees,” Alty tells MyTrueNorthNow. “All you have to do is go to the Multiplex, make sure you’ve signed in whether you’re staying there or not, the request is that everybody go there just so the community government of Behchokǫ̀ knows who’s in town, and there you’ll be able to get more information on how to access free city facilities,” she adds.

Additionally, the City says finding shelter for Behchokǫ̀ residents remains the number one priority, but Mayor Alty confirms some resources for residents will become available through donations.

“Gift cards are always welcome, those can be dropped off at the Multiplex,” Alty says. “After that, stay tuned for more information, for now everything is just making sure everyone is arriving in Yellowknife, has a place to stay, and then they’ll be able to sort out what the need is and how people can contribute,” she adds.
