First Behchokǫ evacuees arrive in Yellowknife

Yellowknife is set to play host to Behchokǫ evacuees in the ongoing wildfire situation between the two communities. 

As evacuees begin to trickle in, Behchokǫ residents are reminded to check in at the Yellowknife Multiplex where they can seek shelter and a cot to sleep in.

“It’s scary and it feels so sudden,” one evacuee tells MyTrueNorthNow. “That alert, (be prepared to evacuate) this afternoon to quickly being told to leave,” they add.

Residents leaving Behchokǫ are also reminded to take care when driving on Highway 3, to avoid any conflict which may delay traffic.

Transportation through busses is available to anyone remaining in the community, and those seeking transport to Yellowknife can check in at the Khon Go Cho Centre.
