Woman assaulted in Yellowknife break-and-enter, one arrested

Yellowknife RCMP responded to a report of a break-and-enter on July 23rd, 2023.

According to police, a woman had returned to her apartment in the early morning hours and discovered a man inside.

Reports suggest the man was known to the woman, but he did not live inside the apartment and was not expected or permitted to be inside when she returned.

The woman says the man demanded money from her and seriously assaulted her when she refused. The man proceeded to steal the woman’s phone and a jacket before fleeing the apartment building.

Officers were successful in gathering surveillance footage from the building and identified the suspect.

The 40-year-old Yellowknife man was arrested shortly after the incident and was found in possession of the stolen items.

Police charged the man with break-and-enter, assault causing bodily harm, common assault, and theft under five-thousand. He was remanded into custody where he remains until his next court date.
