Lifejacket loaner stations coming to two territorial parks

Yellowknife, NWT – Lifejacket loaner stations will be coming to two territorial parks this summer.

Development Manager Shaun Percival with the Lifesaving Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories says stations will be opening on the beach at Fred Henne and Hay River Territorial Park in late June.

The kiosks will allow visitors to borrow lifejackets in various sizes free of charge and return them after use.

Percival says the service is meant to appeal to anyone.

“Quite often people go to visit the park and perhaps they’ve brought lifejackets for the kids but they’ve outgrown them, they forgot lifejackets at home or they can’t afford them. Whatever the case may be, you can borrow them.”

Percival says the program started in Alberta in 2010.

He says part of this year’s water safety campaign will include the message “you’re not expecting to need a lifejacket today” to make people stop and think before heading out on the water.
