Feds introduce amendments to NWT Act, MLA terms could vary

Yellowknife, NWT – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has advised Premier Bob McLeod of his government’s intention to introduce amendments to the Northwest Territories Act to allow the current Assembly to vary its term.

In March, MLA’s passed a motion asking the Premier to communicate with Harper’s office to request that they be able to sit an extra year to avoid an election overlap.

If the federal election proceeds as currently scheduled and does in fact overlap with a territorial election next October, the Legislative Assembly will consider a change to the election date to avoid that conflict.

MLA’s will determine whether to change the date after further discussion in the fall and public consultation.
