Winds push Sambaa K’e fires away from community

The fires in Sambaa K’e remain out of control and sit around 8km from the edge of the community as of June 13th at 8:00 pm.

Now burning an estimated 265,000 Hectares within the NWT, NWT Fire says they are working hard to establish preventative measures to stop the fire from damaging the community.

Yesterday, winds from the northwest pushed the fire south and away from the community. Crews conducted small-scale burns around some structures to defend them in anticipation of the fire reaching the community.

NWT Fire says winds from the north are expected to continue to push the flames away from the community. As of yesterday evening, air tankers completed retardant drops to reinforce dozer lines, and air tankers will continue to stay on standby to assist as needed.
