Yellowknife Farmers Market Celebrates 10th Anniversary

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Yellowknife Farmers Market!

This year’s market officially begins on Tuesday, June 6th, and will launch the tenth year of fresh, locally made produce, and homemade crafts being sold at the Somba K’e Plaza.

The Market was first established in 2013, and over the last ten years, the YKFM has helped to incubate more than a hundred small businesses, expand the local food system in Yellowknife and provide a popular weekly summer celebration of food and community for Yellowknifers and visitors alike.

France Benoit, the President and Co-Founder of the YKFM, said in a statement:

“On the day of the first Market, we had no idea whether anyone would show up. There were just a handful of vendors. This year there are nearly 50! That’s what’s so incredible about this community. We support each other to take the risk of trying something new, putting ourselves out there to show and share what we can create from this land.”

This year will see several family events hosted at the Market over the summer, as well as free seeds for Market vendors, and gardening workshops for younger residents with the goal of inspiring the next generation of local growers.

On July 30th, a special event called Saladbration! will be held, partnering with the Territorial Agrifood Association and the Yellowknife Culinary Festival. This celebration of locally-produced food will see a giant community-sized salad created live in Somba K’e Civic Plaza.
