Fort Resolution officially placed under Administration, relieving council of their duties

The Hamlet of Fort Resolution has officially been placed under Administration from the GNWT. The order will remain in effect until it is repealed at a later date to be determined.

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) determined earlier this year that it has become necessary to place the Hamlet of Fort Resolution under Administration due to financial and operational challenges in the community.

“I am appointing an Administrator to put plans and processes in place to ensure the community government is able to meet its financial obligations and the needs of its residents.” Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Shane Thompson said in a release.

The order appoints Shawn Stuckey as Municipal Administrator and relieves the Mayor and all members of Fort Resolution council of their duties.

The GNWT says the decision is not one to be taken lightly and is an exceptional measure that has been deemed necessary to stabilize the Hamlet.

Stuckey has been tasked with completing and submitting the 2023-24 Budget and establishing a recovery plan. Once the Minister is satisfied the issues in Fort Resolution have been resolved, the Minister may revoke the Administration Order and call an election.

“I look forward to calling an election for a new Council once the challenges facing the Hamlet have been addressed,” Thompson added.
