Northwestel launches fibre internet in two more NWT communities

Northwestel has launched fibre internet to two more communities in the NWT, Aklavik and Nahanni Butte.

Community members can now expect streaming speeds of up to 50 Mbps on unlimited internet plans, up from 15 Mbps previously.

“We know how important fast, unlimited Internet access is to northerners.” Northwestel President Curtis Shaw said in a release. “It can improve access to health care, distance education, and other services that enable people to stay in their own communities,” he added.

These upgrades are part of Northwestel’s ‘Every Community Project,’ a three-year project to bring high-speed unlimited internet to 10,000 homes across the NWT and the Yukon.

According to Northwestel, the service provider plans to complete 17 more communities, including six more in the NWT this year.
