Fire Ban Lifted for McKinnon Territorial Park

The fire ban that was in effect for the McKinnon Territorial Park in Norman Wells has been lifted.

While the ban is no longer in effect, NWT Parks is reminding guests to only light campfires in locations that are specifically designated for them. They recommend keeping a bucket of water close by in case the fire starts to get out of control, as well as a shovel, and some sand. Be sure to fully extinguish a fire before going to bed or leaving the camp site.

They are also reminding park guests of the “SOAK, STIR, SOAK: method for putting out fires.

– Soak the fire with plenty of water, and make sure to get all of the embers, not just the ones that are visibly glowing.

– Stir up the leftover coals, wood, and embers to expose any part of the fire that has not been put out yet.

– Soak the fire again. Repeat this process until the fire is definitively put out.
