Premier Cochrane issues statement regarding Indigenous/territorial government relations

Since the beginning of 2023, Premier Caroline Cochrane and the territorial government have been working with the federal government and three Indigenous governments to establish shared interests and agreements to advance policy in the north.

On May 29th, Premier Cochrane issued a statement regarding the advancement of agreements with Indigenous governments in the future. Cochrane spoke on several items and acknowledged recent challenges surrounding a historic disconnect between self-governing Indigenous communities and the GNWT.

“Given these challenges, I am pleased to let you know today that we are making meaningful progress in our efforts to settle treaty, land, resources, and self-government agreements,” Cochrane said.

Over the past four months, the GNWT and several Indigenous governments have initialed multiple milestone agreements surrounding issues such as Reconciliation agreements with KátÅ‚’odeeche First Nation, and Self Government agreements in Norman Wells.

The Premier also confirmed that going forward, the GNWT and Indigenous governments will continue to collaborate and recognize Indigenous issues on future projects in the territory.
