UPDATE: NWT Fire confirms Hay River/KFN fire is classified as ‘Being Held’

After a nearly two-week long battle, NWT Fire officially announced that the fire near Hay River/KFN is now classified as ‘Being Held.’

The fire is not expected to grow under current conditions. Crews successfully stopped the fire from reaching the forest near the south end and southeast flank of the fire.

NWT Fire says that while the fire is being held, it does not mean flareups and growth are out of the question. Objectives for crews remain the same until the fire is no longer a threat which includes defensive strengthening of lines surrounding the fire and extinguishing any hotspots that remain in KFN.

NWT fire confirmed if progress continues, ‘mopping up’ procedures will become a top priority. Crews will go through areas, look for hot spots, extinguish them, and turn over the dirt to make sure the perimeter is cold.
