Hay River residents looking to return home report concerns regarding transportation

Mixed emotions at the Multiplex today as Hay River residents begin to return home after a long week and a half following evacuation orders put in place last Sunday.

Several evacuees were packing up their belongings and families into their cars, eager to return home; however, many evacuees without transportation reported being unsure if they were going to be able to return today.

“Well I’ve been waiting for the bus.” One frustrated evacuee tells MyTrueNorthNow. “I’ve been told like six different things about when we can leave and no one has given me any word on where the transportation is,” he adds.

Despite transportation concerns, the Town of Hay River has officially launched stage two of the community re-entry plan and Hay River community members without special healthcare needs are now able to return home.

Mayor Kandis Jameson reminds residents that the re-entry is still under alert and residents may be ordered to evacuate at any time due to the wildfire’s ‘active’ status near the municipality.
