Favorable winds expected for Hay River/KFN fire crews

The fire in Hay River/KFN remains out of control and was last mapped at 3209 hectares.

Winds today look favorable for fire crews; expected to come from the southeast, pushing the fire away from Highway 5. However, hot weather and low moisture in the forest continues to cause concern for possible flare-ups.

According to NWT Fire, over the last week, nearly 14km of control lines have been built through the forest; stretching from the Old Village to the Hay River Corridor and around the south of the fire.

Control lines, along with road widening has helped fire crews make progress towards NWT Fire’s ultimate goal of preventing the spread of the fire south and hooking to the east towards the river and town as a result of winds.

NWT Fire reminds Hay River/KFN evacuees, until lines are built, strengthened, and held near the southern part of the fire, it is unsafe to return and there remains a risk to communities.
