Concerns for southern flank of KFN/Hay River wildfire rise, due to no rain and extremely dry air

The KFN/Hay River fire remains out of control and according to the latest reports, the fire remains around 3200 hectares in size.

Crews are expecting lower temperatures today which will cool off the ground and give firefighters more time before activity picks up again.

NWT Fire says they are concerned with no rain in the forecast and very dry air, which could lead to high fire activity and smoke through 7:00 pm this evening. NWT Fire adds, teams will be pushing to hold lines at the south of the fire as winds are expected to carry flames that way.

Crews also report concern for the southeast flank of the fire, and Hay River, as there is a continuous stretch of forest which may burn aggressively and cause the fire to spread across the river and Highway 5.

NWT Fire says until lines are built, and held across the southern end of the fire, there will continue to be risk to the communities.
