Fire crews plan a controlled burn in KFN

According to NWT Fire, structure protection in KFN remains a top priority and plans to strengthen defenses on the west side of the blaze have been implemented to limit growth not only on the west side but the south of the fire as well.

Ignition operations have began in Hay River/KFN to remove vegetation and slow the growth of the wildfire in the area. NWT Fire says they have identified an opportunity to complete a controlled burn and the operation will be completed around the southeast flank of the fire around the Sandy Creek Lodge in the area.

The aim of the burn is to protect the Lodge and limit growth to the south, east, and west. NWT Fire confirms that the plan will generate visible smoke in Hay River and KFN but leadership is aware of risks and operating accordingly.
