‘It’s the Northern way…’ GNWT vows to match donations raised by United Way to support Hay River/KFN evacuees

Since the wildfire outbreak near Hay River and KFN, individuals and families were forced to evacuate, leading to widespread displacement across the territory.

The GNWT announced today they have committed to match donations through United Way NWT to support Hay River and KFN evacuees who have been displaced due to fires. The government says they are matching donations up to $150,000, and promises to directly support residents during the disaster.

“The North is known for being a place where residents come together to help those who are in a time of great need – and the communities currently impacted by fires need our support,” Premier Caroline Cochrane says. “I know that residents will heed the call and help however they can. It’s the Northern way,” she adds.

During this process, United Way NWT will act as a centralized hub to collect donations and distribute funds accordingly.
