Hot, dry weather increases fire intensity in Hay River/KFN

Fires in Hay River/KFN remain out of control. Extremely hot dry weather led to strong fire activity with rising intensity, easterly winds pushed heavy smoke and ash towards communities.

Despite visibility concerns, airtankers and bucketing helicopters continued through the day as visibility allowed. 

NWT Fire says potential southwest winds are expected today which may push the fires from the communities.

Two fires, one in Sahtu and one in the Beaufort Delta were brought under control last night. Crews are actively working to protect communities and fire fighters are now active in Wood Buffalo National Park.
