Canadian best-selling author has strong words for Yellowknife students

Yellowknife, NWT – Don’t coast on talent and use knowledge to better yourself.

That was the message from best-selling author and international speaker Calvin Helin during presentations at various Yellowknife schools this week.

Helin, who lives in British Columbia, spoke to students at Range Lake North, Mildred Hall, Sir John Franklin and William McDonald between Monday and Tuesday.

He says it’s important for young scholars to have an open mind when it comes to learning.

“One of my messages is that education is just going to school and then you stop learning once you get out of school. Really though, education is what I call having a mind of reinvention and being prepared to learn every second of the day.”

Helin grew up in a remote Native American village in northwestern B.C.

He says it’s important for people from small communities to understand that they don’t have to be confined to that space.

Helin is also a fourth degree black belt who teaches martial arts lessons to disadvantaged children as a way of teaching them discipline and other important life lessons.
