NWT Court removes limit on number of picketers

Another blow to the City of Yellowknife in the ongoing city versus union strike came on February 17, when the NWT Supreme court amended the interim injunction limiting the number of picketers allowed on the lines.

“It is shameful that the City is attempting to use the courts to infringe on their workers’ rights and freedoms in order to mitigate the financial impacts the City faces as a consequence of their lockout.” The UNW/PSAC said in a press release.

The union also says that members are ‘more united than ever’ and will continue to picket in accordance with the law, until the employer is ready to come back to the table with a new offer.

“It’s nice to have more people on the line now, it boosts morale. When we were limited to six on the line we still had our spirits up but now that we’re able to gather in a larger capacity, it’s uplifting.” Picket Captain Bonnie Ritchey tells My True North Now.

Picketers have been kept in the dark regarding a potential new negotiation and will continue to strike until further notice.
