Beach attendants to be stationed at Hay River Territorial Park this summer

Yellowknife, NWT – At least one more territorial park will be supervised this summer.

Starting June 21st, waterfront attendants will be on the beach at Hay River Territorial Park providing supervision and educating beachgoers about the importance of water safety.

Hay River mayor Andrew Cassidy says the town is pleased to enter into a partnership with the G.N.W.T to make the beach safer.

Cassidy says it will be a busy couple of weeks for the town.

“There is some training that will take place. Beach attendants aren’t quite the same as lifeguards. They’re not necessarily Bronze Medallion or Bronze Cross but they do have to know first aid and CPR. We’ll also have to establish some of the ground rules for the beach to ensure that people can still fully utilize the beach, have as much fun as possible and still maintain a degree of safety.”

Cassidy says the town will handle the recruitment and management of beach attendants.

The Lifesaving Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories will provide training for them while the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment will supply all required safety equipment.
