Tlicho Government Offering Free Books for Children Aged 0-5

The Tlicho government has recently joined a program to help bolster a love of reading in young children.

Earlier this month, the Tlicho Government announced on their Facebook page that they are taking part in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program! How the program works is that any parent with a child under the age of 5 can sign up, and until the child’s fifth birthday, they will receive one book in the mail every month.

Patricia Turner, the Senior Advisor for Early Childhood Education Programs with the Tlicho Government explained that forms can be found on the Tlicho Government website. She also shared how they first got involved with the program.

“The Dolly Parton Imagination Library started in the United States, I think around 1995, and then it came to Canada around 2006, but our sponsor is the NWT Literacy Council, and they reached out to the Tlicho in the last couple months about whether we would be interested in it and promoting it in our four communities.”

Turner also explained what kind of books parents can expect to receive for their children.

“I think it’s all kinds of books, and they’re, from what I’ve been told, really solid and interesting books for children, and it’s not just educational. It’s really to promote a love of reading, and to encourage more children to read books.”

The online form can be found on the Tlicho Government website by clicking here.
