Northwestel Completes All 2022 Fibre Projects

Northwestel marked the completion of its 2022 fibre-to-the-home projects with community celebrations in Burwash Landing and Haines Junction, Yukon.

These are two of 17 Yukon and NWT communities that received fibre-to-the-home service in 2022 through Northwestel’s Every Community Project, including the Whitehorse areas of McPherson, Ibex Valley and Hidden Valley.

Over 80% of Yukon and NWT homes now have access to unlimited high-speed Internet that meets or exceeds the CRTC’s universal service objective of 50/10 Mbps unlimited service. The majority have access to the North’s fastest home Internet, up to 500 Mbps download. This marks a significant expansion in Internet access since 2019, when zero households in Canada’s Far North met the CRTC standard.

Most communities at the time only had access to 15 Mbps home Internet. These improvements were a result of Northwestel’s own significant investments and funding from the CRTC Broadband Fund.

The NWT communities that were reached throughout 2022 include Behchokǫ̀, Fort Good Hope, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Tulita, Wrigley, Deline, and Dettah.

A list of NWT communities that the company plans to reach in 2023 include Whati, Enterprise, Fort Resolution, Kakisa, Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik, Nahanni Butte, and Tuktoyaktuk.
