YK Food Bank Prepares for Stuff the Bus 2022

The 17th annual Stuff the Bus food drive is coming up once again.

All weekend long, TrueNorthFM staff members will be set up at the Yellowknife Co-op from 9am to 5pm. Shoppers will be able to purchase bags of food for $25 to donate to the Food Bank. The bags themselves will be loaded onto a waiting bus and shipped off as soon as everything is wrapped up.

With the holidays just around the corner, December often proves to be one of the most important and busiest times for the Food Bank. In normal operations, the Food Bank uses a general hamper to provide their clients with the meals they need throughout the year. Coleen McClean, a member of the Food Bank, went into a little more detail about how the food is distributed.

“It is separated according to how many people are in a household. So if it’s a single person, we give a single bag, and then from two people up, it gradually goes to either one family bag, or wo or three family bags. It just depends on how many people are in the household.”

Colleen added that the last few years have made operations a little harder for the Food Bank. Once COVID began, most clients could only come in by appointment. In the past few months however, things have opened up once again. Clients are able to come by whenever they need between 11am and 2pm.

“It’s much better, and since we’ve been able to open it up, it has increased considerably. We have new people who have never gone to the food bank before as well, and we open every other Saturday. So the next one would be December the 10th, and every two weeks after that.”

Colleen added that the Food Banks hampers are running low at the moment, so Stuff the Bus will be a great help to them during this busy time of the year.
