Federal Government providing $25.5 million to Sahtu Communities

On Thursday, November 10th, a major announcement was made regarding the funding of regional housing needs.

Chalres McNeely, the Chairperson of the Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated, and Michael McLeod, the MP for the Northwest Territories, met in Yellowknife’s Greenstone Building to make a special announcement;

Through the Indigenous Community Infrastructure Fund, the Government of Canada is providing a total of $25.5 million to the Sahtu Secratariat Incorporated, who will then distribute these funds to the land corporations in the communities of Colville Lake, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, and Tulita.

McNeely took a moment to express his thanks to those who were able to make this historic investment happen.

“I’m really happy today to stand in front of you and thank the liberal government and thank Michael for really helping us achieve our goal, and our goal is to be self sufficient.”

“SSI appreciates the efforts of Canada to assist with badly needed housing in the Sahtu Region and looks forward to additional progress in the next year. Both parties know of the challenges facing the region’s residents and SSI believes we can work through our joint efforts, and help to address this most basic human need”

MP McLeod also had a statement on the importance of this kind of action.

“Part of our rebuilding of our relationship is to fulfill the needs of our communities; needs that have been push to the side for far too long, and in the Northwest Territories, that means providing support for adequate, affordable, safe, and sustainable housing infrastructure.”
