GNWT Reviewing Incident at Fort Smith Correctional Facility

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has ordered a review of an incident at the Fort Smith Correctional Complex, where an inmate was inadvertently released from the facility and brought back into custody.

On January 7, 2022, an inmate was released from the Fort Smith Correctional Complex. Following the release from custody, the individual was reporting to and had been under the supervision of a probation officer.

The RCMP contacted the NWT Corrections Service on October 19, 2022 regarding the release status of the inmate. Upon review, it was determined that the inmate was released inadvertently and as a result was brought back into custody on October 20, 2022 by the RCMP without incident.

The GNWT’s review of the incident aims to document what resulted in the inadvertent release and identify any corrective actions needing to be taken by the Corrections Service moving forward. The review is expected to be completed at the end of November.
