With the holiday season now on the way, the people of Yellowknife have been given a chance to help out the less fortunate.
Local companies, organizations, families, and individuals can make a family’s holiday season brighter by taking part in the YWCA NWT’s Holiday Sponsorship Program. By sponsoring a family in the YWCA’s transitional or emergency housing program, the sponsor provides a family with gifts and food for over the holidays.
Hawa Dumbuya-Sesay, the Executive Director of YWCA NWT, explained in a statement that not every family across the Territories will be able to afford gifts for their children during the holidays. The skyrocketing costs of groceries, fuel, and other necessities throughout the year has only lead to more financial strain on many families in the YWCA’s housing program.
“It’s truly the ultimate gift to help others and this community has always gone above and beyond to show local families they care by brightening up the holiday season and helping children have a Christmas they may not have otherwise and bringing hope to those who need it most.”
Anyone who wishes to sponsor a family can do so through the YWCA website by clicking here. Once a sponsorship has been established, unwrapped gifts and grocery gift cards can be delivered to the YWCA NWT housing office in December.
Those interested in becoming a sponsor have until December 6th to get registered.
