G.N.W.T: Construction of Inuvik to Tuk highway not behind schedule

Yellowknife, NWT – Construction of the territory’s $299-million highway is well underway.

That’s according to the G.N.W.T’s Department of Transportation, now that work on the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk highway has wrapped up for the season.

Director of Highways Kevin McLeod with the D.O.T says 29 kilometers of road were built this winter.

We asked him how the two communities have been impacted by the construction.

“With 335 people getting full-time employment that generates a lot of spinoffs itself in terms of Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. Morale and spending have increased and lots of things fall out when people have work.”

McLeod says the Government of Canada is contributing $200-million to the project.

The G.N.W.T will cover the remaining $99-million.

The 137 kilometer highway, which will connect Canada from coast to coast to coast, is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
