Yellowknife Library Running Mascot Contest

Throughout the month of October, Yellowknife children will have the chance to express their creativity at the Public Library.

All month long, the library is holding a contest for kids between the ages of 6 and 12 to design a mascot for the kids section at the library

Kristina Solowy, the Library Technician, shared a few extra details about the contest.

“The winning entry will be turned into a stuffed character that will reside in our children’s area, and the winner will also be awarded one to keep for themselves as well. It’s running through the month of October, which is Library Month, so we are going to be choosing our winner at the end of October, the 31st will be the last day they can enter, and it’s gonna take about eight weeks for the mascot to be turned into the stuffed creature.”

It is expected that whichever creature wins, their stuffed counterpart will be ready for the library by Christmas time.

Solowy explained that she first saw this idea executed by another library elsewhere, and she decided that it would be a fun idea to try out in Yellowknife. She added that it would be a fun and creative idea for the younger kids of Yellowknife, who don’t come by the library as often during the school months.

Submissions do not have to follow any specific theme, and can be whatever the child wishes to draw. The only conditions are that the drawing is in colour, the drawing is of an entire character, not just the face, and that the picture is in 8 1/2 by 11. The character must also have a name, and an explanation of why they like coming to the library.

Solowy shared some details on what the future of this contest might look like in the future.

“At this point in time, it is just for this one time only. We’ll see how the mascot goes, and we hope it will permanently reside in our children’s area, and if children want to snuggle up and read with it while they’re here, that’s great. If it is a hit, we may do it again in a year or two!”

At least one submission was sent in on the day the contest was first announced. It is unknown at the moment how large the plush figure will be.
