YK RCMP Encourage 9PM Routine

In response to multiple thefts and vehicle entries, the Yellowknife RCMP are encouraging people to adopt a 9PM routine as a crime prevention tool.

This is program is designed to serve as a reminder to residents to confirm their vehicles are locked and their properties are secured. Taking these small steps to “target harden” your vehicles, campers, houses and sheds can have a big impact and deter theft.

The checklist for residents includes the following:

REMOVE VALUABLES AND PERSONAL ACCESSORIES FROM VEHICLES

· Items left in plain sight inside vehicles are tempting targets for thieves. Ensuring cellular phones and their accessories, electronical gadgets such as GPS devices and tablets, money, sunglasses and other valuable items are brought inside your residence will reduce the appeal of thieves to enter your vehicle.

LOCK VEHICLES, BOATS AND CAMPERS

· Most incidents of theft from vehicles reported to the Yellowknife RCMP relate to vehicles which have been unintentionally left unlocked. These incidents are crimes of opportunity and locking these vehicles, boat cabins and campers will serve as a significant deterrent.

TAKE KEYS OUT OF ATVs AND SMOWMOBILES

· Removing the keys from recreational vehicles is the best way to secure these items from theft.

SECURE GARAGE AND SHED DOORS

· Closing and locking sheds, garages and outbuildings is the best way to prevent thefts from these structures. Tools, gas and hunting/camping equipment are items which are often stolen from sheds, garages and outbuildings.

CLOSE AND LOCK ALL EXTERNAL DOORS

· Most incidents of theft reported to the Yellowknife RCMP are from unsecured and/or unlocked locations. Making sure to check that doors are locked is the best defence from these theft occurrences.

TURN ON AN EXTERIOR LIGHT

· During the night and periods of extended darkness in the winter, even having an illuminated exterior light can act as a deterrent. Small steps to make your vehicles and property secure and well lit can make them unattractive targets for thieves.

The RCMP social media accounts will be posting nightly reminders at 9PM.
