A Hay River jury has found a man guilty of sexual assault and sexual interference involving a girl aged under 16.

Michael St John, a former swimming coach, now faces up to 10 years in prison. He will be sentenced in the coming months.

He was released under strict conditions following Thursday’s verdict. He may leave his home for only two hours each day and must not have any contact with children.

On Friday afternoon, the territory’s francophone school board announced St John had resigned as its Hay River trustee. He had served on the board for 15 years.

St John’s victim gave details of abuse spanning a decade-long period in video evidence shown to the court earlier this week. St John maintained his innocence.

The Crown has asked for the sexual interference charge to be stayed, leaving only the sexual assault conviction, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

In November, St John will reportedly stand trial in Yellowknife regarding a separate sexual assault charge.
