New Sports Centre Will Soon be Opened in Yellowknife

A new sports centre will soon be open to the city of Yellowknife.

Hockey NWT, NWT Softball, and the Aboriginal Sports Circle NWT have all worked together to build the Multi-Sport Training Facility, which as of this week, is now open for walkthroughs by appointments from various sports organizations.

This building is a convertible 4,500 square foot space which is equipped with synthetic ice, artificial turf, and sport flooring that can be configured to house archery and hockey shooting ranges, softball pitching lanes and batting cages, and Northern & Dene games. The MSTF is located at 327C Old Airport Road, Yellowknife, NT, in the building commonly referred to as “the old Sears building.”

On February 28th, Hockey NWT, NWT Softball, Archery NT, and Northern & Dene Games NT programming will commence. The MSTF was a collaborative project that stemmed from the partner organization’s shared difficulty in securing adequate rental space to deliver programming due to the high demand and limitations of current facilities. This new facility will provide TSOs a safe and high-quality area to provide year-round programming for athletes, officials and territorial community leaders.

The first official event scheduled at the MSTF is the 2021 NWT Archery Championships on March 25th, to the 27th.

Search continues for ways to deal with 200,000 tons of arsenic dust at Giant Mine

Scientists presented projects for a more permanent solution to hundreds of thousands of tons arsenic dust from the mine. One method uses local beer to fuel a transformation of the toxic dust, while another tries to turn it into glass. Another proposed method looks at turning the dust into a highly sought commodity known as metallic arsenic. Additional proposals look whether robotic technology could allow crews to virtually pilot the extraction of the dust while “sipping coffee” from a distance.
