The boil water advisory in Yellowknife, Dettah and Ndilo has been lifted as the city’s new water treatment plant comes online.
The territory’s department of health made the announcement Friday afternoon.
The boil water advisory lasted for a month – since May 11, residents in Yellowknife and the surrounding area had been asked to boil their water for at least one minute due to higher than normal turbidity levels, or muddy water.
But Yellowknife’s new water treatment plant, built at a cost of more than $30 million, is now operational and consequently water quality has returned to acceptable levels.
City crews are in the process of flushing out the city’s water mains. With that in mind, residents and businesses are encouraged to flush their own water supply by doing the following:
- Run all cold water faucets and drinking fountains for 1 minute before use
- Flush and clean all water-using equipment, such as soda fountains, coffee makers and ice-making machines, for at least 1 minute
- Change all point of use filters (tap mounted carbon filters, Brita filters, etc)
- Flush and clean all coffee machines
- Drain and flush all ice-making machines
- Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle
- Drain and refill hot water heaters
- Drain and clean water-holding tanks
