GNWT Announces Fewer Restrictions on Leisure Travel

The GNWT has just announced that changes are coming to the current COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Within a few weeks time, people traveling into the NWT will no longer require full vaccination. Visitors will now only be required to have an approved Self-Isolation Plan. This change is expected to come into effect on February 28th, so it is expected that there will be an increase in the time it takes to process a SIP. Leisure travelers are advised to submit their SIPs around seven to ten days before setting out.

All incoming leisure travelers will be expected to follow health and safety guidelines to the same degree as NWT residents. This includes wearing masks when required, gathering limits, and self-isolation if necessary.

This decision is a sign that the GNWT may be moving to end all public health guidelines and mandates as the declared public health emergency is expected to come to an end.

The GNWT has stated that they announced this decision early, to allow tourism-related businesses and services to make the proper preparations as COVID-19 is expected to take a downward trend as we approach the Spring season.

Further information will be provided when available.
