‘Toque Tuesday’ Event Raises Over $4,000 For Homelessness

Over $4,000 have been raised to help fight homelessness in Yellowknife.

A fundraising event was hosted by the group ‘Raising the Roof’ on Tuesday, February 1st. Raising the Roof is a non-profit organization focused on prevention, education and local action to create long-term solutions for homelessness.

The event they held was called “Toque Tuesday,” and through the sale of hundreds of toques on the Raising the Roof website, as well as YouTube livestream, the event was able to raise approximately $4,400, though the total number is still being counted.

Sara Morris, who helped to organize the event, shared her feelings on how it went.

“I’m really excited about the turnout we had. I think the last check was 292 items sold, and over four thousand dollars. The livestream went well. I did a little sit-down, talking about it on the Raising the Roof YouTube Channel. I’m really excited for how it turned out, and excited for what’s going to come next.”

She added that this year’s event was largely done virtually, and that in a normal year, Raising the Roof usually puts on a few in person events and activities.

Morris also shared how the money will be used.

“So the toques were fifteen dollars, and five dollars from every item sold will go to Home Base, and the money will be going directly to them through either a donation, or an email money transfer.”

The rest of the money will be sent to various other organizations across the city.

Home Base Yellowknife is an organization that provides dorm-style housing in downtown Yellowknife for youths, and also provides mental health and addictions programs.

Toques are available for purchase at all times, and can be found by clicking here.
