Yellowknife student one of 20 in Canada to receive leadership scholarship

Yellowknife, NWT – A Yellowknife student has been rewarded for leading social change in her community.

St. Pat’s Grade 12 student Alannis McKee received the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership valued up to $70,000.

McKee was honoured during a ceremony in Ottawa.

We asked her about her post-secondary plans.

“The TD scholarship enables students to go to any college or university to pursue some kind of education. After high school I’m hopeful I can attend university for a Bachelor of Science but I’m also leaving my options open.”

McKee was recognized for her efforts to support marginalized groups in the North.

Her Best Buddies program at St. Pat’s seeks to connect mainstream youth to those with intellectual disabilities.

20 high schoolers from across the country were presented with the award.

McKee was the only student to be recognized from any of the territories.
