The city of Yellowknife will soon have a chance to lend some support to its homeless population.
A fundraising event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 1st, hosted by a group called Raising the Roof. This group is a non-profit organization focused on prevention, education and local action to create long-term solutions for homelessness.
One of the ways that Raising the Roof has helped to fight against homelessness in the past has been an initiative to rent out vacant lots, and install enough renovations to make them livable for homeless individuals.
Raising the Roof works with many local contractors to help convert these lots, but that’s not the only work they do.
Coming up next week, they will be holding their “Toque Tuesday” event. This event is to help raise money to support solutions to homelessness, and raise awareness.
Sara Morris, a Youth Coordinator for Raising the Roof, explained how the money from this event will be used.
“I’m currently working with my coordinator to get the proceeds raised from toque sales to stay locally. So, whether it’s just donating money to a local shelter, or using that money to support local programs to help people experiencing homelessness.”
She clarified that while some of the money would go towards Raising the Roof’s national efforts, she would make sure that the majority of it stayed local.
This is the first time that Yellowknife will be hosting this event, and Morris is hopeful that they will experience a good turnout.
