$1.44 million in additional support funding announced for tourism businesses

The GNWT is providing $1.44 million in additional support funding for tourism operators and tourism related businesses in the territories.

The Tourism Restart Investment Program is being funded with assistance from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

The program will provide one-time funding for eligible applicants to support; marketing activities for Canadian and international audiences; recruitment, training and capacity building for new and returning employees; adapting or enhancing protocols for tourism activities; and infrastructure upgrades to meet health and safety requirements.

Tourism Minister Caroline Wawzonek says these supports will provide applicants the ability to plan their upgrades and hire assistance as needed.

Wawzonek says for more than a year, they have identified and invested in relief and recovery programs to ensure that when the time comes, the NWT tourism industry will be able to rebuild.

“The program continues this relief and recovery process by providing tourism businesses with funding that supports their infrastructure, training and marketing activities as they prepare to welcome back visitors,” she adds.

The maximum available funding is $18,000 and applicants will be required to contribute cash equity of 10 per cent.

Funding is available to tourism operators with a valid tourism operator licence and tourism-related business in the NWT. Non-profit organizations meeting either of these requirements are also eligible.

Tourism operators who want to apply for TRIP, can do so online. The deadline for applications is October 20th.
