Yellowknife, NWT – The city of Yellowknife is one step closer to regulating helmet use for youth.
Earlier this week, a helmet by-law for anyone under the age of 18 received first and second reading at City Hall.
Yellowknife mayor Mark Heyck says the by-law is designed to educational rather than punitive.
“There is a $25 in the by-law but I think the intention going forward and even beyond the grace period is to encourage compliance instead of using punishment. Municipal enforcement has talked about having a constant supply of helmets to provide to youth riding without them.”
Councillor Niels Konge voted against the by-law going to a third and final reading this week.
He believes regulated helmet use for youth will prevent them from riding bikes and other wheeled apparatuses.
A final vote is expected near the end of June.
If approved, the youth by-law would come into effect July 1 with a six-month grace period.
