Power has been restored in Yellowknife after it shut down citywide Wednesday afternoon. But officials say the outages could happen again during the night.
Lightning around the Snare Hydro Plant transmission line was the cause of a citywide power outage impacting Yellowknife, Dettah and Ndilo, around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The cause of the outage appears to be a lightning strike on the transmission line from Snare,” NTPC spokesperson Doug Prendergast said in an email.
Yellowknife-Dettah-Behchoko full system outage. Restoration is underway. Thank-you for your patience while we work to restore power.

In a post to Twitter, the territorial power corporation said crews had restored power around 5:30 p.m.
“Lightning is still present in the area and could continue to cause problems this evening,” Prendergast added.
