Yellowknife R.C.M.P recapture remanded prisoner on the loose

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknife R.C.M.P say a remanded prisoner is back in police custody after a brief escape.

The Mounties say the incident happened Monday afternoon when a 34-year-old male managed to remove his handcuffs and escape through the patrol screen of a police vehicle that was parked at the Yellowknife detachment downtown.

We asked Sergeant Marc Coulombe if a faulty barrier between the front and back seat is to blame.

“There are different styles of silent patrolmen. We’ve used some in the past that had a spring-loaded door that popped up from the bottom but those can be very dangerous for prisoners sticking their head forward because they could got struck if that mechanism ever let go. There are different models out there but time should be taken to make sure they’re latched.”

Coulombe says police began a search of the city and located the man just over an hour and a half later at the YK Centre Mall downtown.

The Mounties say he was initially in custody for breaching conditions of probation and did not pose a safety risk to the public.
