Hay River dump fire contained, extinguished: mayor

Yellowknife, NWT – The mayor of Hay River says no one was injured when the town’s landfill erupted into flames.

Andrew Cassidy says a fire broke out in the dump’s household garbage and construction areas Monday afternoon.

He says it took a collective effort to contain it.

“Environment and Natural Resources had a helicopter come along for air support. They were bucketing water to make sure the fire didn’t extend beyond the boundaries of the landfill. They were able to contain it and then throughout the afternoon and overnight they kept digging through the landfill and hitting hotspots to keep the fire contained.”

Cassidy says the fire is out as of Tuesday morning.

A cause is still being investigated, but Cassidy says preliminary reports suggest a garbage truck on site caught fire and winds spread flames to other sections of the dump.

Cassidy says the fire was far enough away from the dangerous goods site, which contains flammable materials, to pose any serious explosion risks.
