NTPC worker dies from Jackfish accident

An NTPC worker has died as a result of an accident at the Jackfish powerplant in Yellowknife on March 5th.

At the time of the accident, Michael Paul Chinna was taken to the Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment.

In an email, Doug Prendergast Manager of Communications confirmed the death and said Michael was an excellent employee who always showed a strong commitment to safety.

“At the time of his accident, he was wearing all of the required personal protective equipment, including a hard hat and safety goggles,” he adds.

Chinna joined NTPC in 2018 in the role of Apprentice Power Systems Electrician.

Prendergast says to protect the privacy of the family and due to an ongoing investigation by the Workplace Safety and Compensation Commission, the NTPC will not be providing any additional information at this time.

Union of Northern Workers President Todd Parsons says the UNW will be participating in the workplace investigation, and would like to offer support to the family.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and fellow members as we all grieve together following this terrible tragedy,” he adds.

Chinna’s sister Nancy, paid tribute to her brother on Facebook yesterday morning.
