Tree of Peace Friendship Centre acquired by GNWT to replace Salvation Army shelter

The Tree of Peace Friendship Centre has been acquired by the GNWT to replace the Salvation Army as the temporary overnight shelter.

The Salvation Army has been closed since Sunday because of a burst pipe.

The overnight men’s shelter has moved to several locations over the past few days, including the SideDoor shelter, currently home of the temporary day shelter.

The Tree of Peace Friendship Centre is located on 51st Street, and is usually a non-profit that runs programs for Indigenous people in the city.

“Under s. 17 of the EMA, the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Paulie Chinna has used the powers available to her under the Act to acquire public or private property to alleviate the emergency,” the GNWT said in a statement.

The Salvation Army posted on Facebook, saying that external contractors continue to work on the cleanup process at the Resource Centre building.

“Water damage has been noted on all 4 floors and will require some time to get back in order,” they wrote in a statement.

“Our priority has been to ensure that those we serve are safe and secure. This has not been an easy undertaking but we are resilient and continue to hope that our building gets back operational as soon as possible.”
