Most businesses are facing tough times at the moment, making cutbacks or closing all together.
Few are expanding their operations.
But Gastown in Yellowknife is an exception to that rule.
Yellowknife city council recently just approved an bylaw re-zoning which will allow the food truck Gastown runs in the summer to be converted into a permanent kitchen.
The move was all about timing, according to manager Jamie Pye.
“It became available at the right time, we were able to make a deal with the owner of it. And we’re just pushing forward with the development that we didn’t plan to do right away. But it’s a couple of years ahead of its time is originally thought of, but we’re just going to go with it and see what we can do

Gas Town will be rolling out some new items, as well as moving away from the pre-packed options.
“I don’t want to give all their secrets away. But we’re going to be expanding on our ice cream cakes and other ice cream treats. We also have a bakery being set up on the inside that will allow us to do cakes, cupcakes, you know, wedding cakes, kind of whatever dessert you would like.”

The opening is set to take place in about a month’s time.
“We’re just happy to be able to be here in Yellowknife unable to you know, this gives us the opportunity to be able to give back to the community. So we are surely appreciated of Yellowknife and everyone here.”
