One individual diagnosed with COVID-19 in YK

One case of COVID-19 has been reported in Yellowknife, related to travel outside the territory.

There has been no community exposure risk identified, as the individual isolated appropriately.

The GNWT advises if you were on WestJet Flight number 3359 from Calgary to Yellowknife on February 8, in rows 2 to 15, you should continue to self-isolate.

Your household should also self-isolate if you aren’t in a self-contained unit of the house, and you should arrange for COVID-19 testing, according to a statement form Dr. Kami Kandola, Chief Public Health Officer for the Northwest Territories.

Kandola reiterates that gatherings should be kept small to help prevent the spread of the virus.

“We are now regularly seeing new cases of COVID-19 in the NWT,” said Kandola. “So far, they have been contained because people are taking the right steps to keep communities safe.”

“But we can’t assume that every instance of COVID-19 will be contained,” she added. “We need to look at our individual and collective behavior to make sure transmission is limited if COVID-19 is present in the community.”

This brings the NWT’s total of COVID-19 cases to 39, with three active cases. That includes this latest case, plus two NWT residents who work at the Gahcho Kué mine.

One of those workers is isolating in Yellowknife, and one is isolating in Fort Liard.
