Extreme Cold Warnings in effect for Yellowknife and several NWT communities

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected tonight and Friday in Yellowknife and several other NWT communities.

Wind chills of -50 to -60 are expected and the extreme cold warnings are expected to persist through the weekend.

Hay River, Inuvik, Behchokǫ̀, Fort Simpson, Fort Providence and Norman Wells are some of the other NWT communities that will be impacted by the extreme cold.

Environment Canada warns that extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

They ask residents to cover up as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

They add that outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.
