City offering classes in Introduction to American Sign Language

The City of Yellowknife will be offering two levels of classes in Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) to residents. The classes are for anyone ages 15 years and older.

The first introduction class is where learners will immerse themselves in the concept and culture of the physical language. No previous knowledge or experience required.

A ‘no-voice’ teaching method will be used to reinforce the learning experience. Participants will learn fingerspelling, ASL language structure and simple conversation.

Introduction to ASL level 1 will run on Mondays at the Multiplex for three weeks starting January 25th to February 8th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

In the second of two Introduction to ASL classes, learners will maintain their full silent immersion experience as they build their skills.

Topics for second course will include:

  • ASL grammar
  • Asking questions (language and etiquette)
  • Communicating time and date (including conceptual time)
  • Sign building

Students will learn through classroom instruction and role-play and personal skills practice.

Worksheets will supplement the classroom instruction so students can review, practice and retain what they have learned.

Introduction to ASL level 2 will run on Mondays at the Multiplex for three weeks starting February 22nd to March 8th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
