Bailey House ready for federal inmates

Yellowknife, NWT – The operators of the Bailey House transitional housing facility in Yellowknife say they have no security concerns if and when federal inmates on conditional release are housed there.

Captain Ruth Gillingham of the Salvation Army, which runs Bailey House, says they already take in prisoners from the North Slave Correctional Centre on conditional release without any problems.

“Bailey House has a security system already and we have 24/7 staff and so when individuals are coming back to a community, they actually have more constraints and there’s more supervision so it’s better for the community for this to be taking place. It’s also safer for people being released from custody because it’s helping them transition back.”

Gillingham says the federal plan has not been finalized as yet, and the contract has not been awarded.

She says they will provide up to four beds for federal prisoners should they get the contract.

Gillingham says prisoners from the north who have served their sentences in the south deserve the right to return home.
