Public sessions to be held for 50-50 development in Yellowknife

For the next two days, the City of Yellowknife is allowing you to have your say on how to proceed with development on 50th Street.

Last September, the City purchased the long-time vacant parking lot at Franklin Avenue and 50th Street for $1.45-million. Now, council and administration want your help to figure out what to do with the space.

Starting Tuesday afternoon, City officials are asking residents to attend public engagement sessions to provide opinions on what to do with the downtown lot.

Engagement sessions will consist of informal drop-in sessions and formal workshops in the Upper Centre Square Mall.

You can attend any of the following sessions:

Informal drop-in sessions

  • Tuesday, May 12 from noon until 8:30pm
  • Wednesday, May 13 from 8:00am until 1:00pm

Formal Workshops

  • Tuesday, May 12 from 1:00pm until 3:30pm and 7:00pm until 9:30pm
  • Wednesday, May 13 from 8:00am until 10:30am.

“With the 50-50 Corner and 50th Street, Yellowknife has the opportunity to bring new life and vitality back to our core,” said Mayor Mark Heyck in a statement.

“Revitalizing our downtown is essential to developing our burgeoning tourism industry, giving businesses and residents central meeting places and helping Yellowknifers to take pride in our wonderful city.”

The City says it’s been trying to revitalize the area since 2008.

Freezing of chambers at Yellowknife’s Giant Mine to begin this summer

The Giant Mine remediation project team says thermosyphons are going to be installed at the underground chambers this summer. Currently, 237,000 tons of arsenic remain stored in the chambers on site. Crews are finishing internal work inside the new water treatment plant at Giant Mine. Commissioning activities are scheduled to start later this year and full operation of the new water is scheduled to begin in 2027.
